Incarcerated dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel is facing a serious health crisis. His heart function has plummeted by 50% over the past year, significantly increasing his risk of death. Attorney Isat Buchanan reveals that Kartel’s worsening Graves’ disease means he can’t endure another trial.

Dr. Karen Phillips’ medical report highlights the dire situation: a retrial could be a death sentence. Buchanan argues that forcing Kartel through this ordeal is unjust, given the unfairness of his previous trial and the emotional toll he’s endured since his incarceration.

The psychological and financial burdens are immense. Buchanan urges the Court of Appeal to consider these factors, as well as the hefty costs of a new trial. He emphasizes that it’s impossible for Kartel and his co-accused to receive a fair trial under these circumstances.

In 2014, Kartel, Shaw ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St John received life sentences for the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams. Though the UK-based Privy Council overturned their convictions in 2024 due to juror misconduct, the men weren’t freed. Now, the Court of Appeal must decide if there will be a retrial.

Kartel’s life hangs in the balance. What will the Court decide? Stay tuned for updates.

  1. The man if him live, he will be a vegetable., it seem to me that they will have to let him go, but they’re using every tool in the judicial arsenal to keep him in custody for whatever reason, which is very clear at this stage. Such a sorrow state him in.
