A recent investigation by Consumer Reports has uncovered alarming findings about synthetic braiding hair, a staple for many, especially within the Black community, including children. The report reveals that all tested samples of synthetic braiding hair contained potentially harmful chemicals, including carcinogens.
What does this mean for you? Consumer Reports breaks down the findings and offers tips to help you stay safe. For many, braided hairstyles are more than just a fashion statement—they’re a cherished tradition that simplifies hair care. However, this new investigation raises serious concerns about the safety of synthetic braiding hair.
Ten popular synthetic braiding hair products were tested, and the results are troubling. Every sample contained carcinogens, chemicals that may cause cancer. Notably, three samples tested positive for benzene, a highly regulated carcinogen. James Rogers, Director of Product Safety at Consumer Reports, led the testing and found lead in 90 percent of the products, a substance for which there is no safe level.
The risks extend beyond these findings. When synthetic hair is dipped in hot water during installation—a common practice—it releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can irritate the eyes, throat, and lungs.
Consumer Reports reached out to all the brands for comment. Only Sensationnel and Magic Fingers responded, both disputing the test methodology. Sensationnel stated, “We unequivocally stand by the safety of Sensationnel products, and our company urges consumers to continue to confidently use Sensationnel products.” Magic Fingers echoed this sentiment, asserting the safety and quality of their materials.
If you use or install synthetic braiding hair, experts recommend the following safety precautions to reduce risks:
– Check for product recalls
– Read labels carefully
– Limit how long you wear the style
If you’ve experienced reactions to synthetic braiding hair, Consumer Reports advises consulting your doctor and considering filing a report with the Food and Drug Administration. Stay informed and take steps to protect your health while enjoying your favorite styles.
