Nigeria and Jamaica are set to explore the possibility of establishing direct flight routes between the two countries, aiming to strengthen their Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA). This initiative was highlighted during a meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and the Jamaican Ambassador to Nigeria, Lincoln Downer.

Ambassador Downer emphasized the importance of enhancing bilateral relations and proposed reviewing the existing BASA to facilitate direct air connectivity. He noted the growing interest in Nigerian culture in Jamaica, particularly Afrobeat music and Nollywood films, underscoring the need for improved diplomatic and air links between the two nations.

Currently, there are no direct flights between Nigeria and Jamaica. Travelers must rely on connecting flights, often involving multiple layovers and extended travel times. For instance, flights from Lagos to Kingston typically involve stops in cities like London or New York, with total travel times exceeding 20 hours.

The establishment of direct flights is expected to boost tourism, enhance business opportunities, and strengthen cultural ties between the two countries. Both governments are optimistic that these efforts will lead to more convenient and efficient travel options for their citizens.
