KINGSTON, Jamaica—Dwight Johnson, a 33-year-old resident of Park Lane, Kingston 19, has been sentenced to life in prison for the unlawful possession of ammunition. The sentence, which was handed down on January 30 in the Supreme Court, stipulates that Johnson will serve a minimum of 15 years before being eligible for parole. In addition, he received a concurrent sentence of three years and six months of hard labour for possession of various firearm parts.

Johnson’s conviction followed a police operation on July 3, 2023, in Park Lane. He was charged under the Firearms (Prohibition, Restriction, and Regulation) Act, 2022. His case is significant as he is the first individual to be convicted under the new Act for possessing assorted firearm parts.

“This conviction sends a clear and strong message that illegal firearms and ammunition possession will not be tolerated,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Wayne Josephs, head of the Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB). “The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is committed to using the full force of the law to bring offenders to justice as part of our ongoing efforts to make Jamaica safer.”

In 2024 alone, over 40 individuals were convicted for breaches of the Firearms Act, which includes charges related to prohibited weapons and other firearm-related offences.

The events leading to Johnson’s arrest unfolded during the July 2023 operation when police officers observed him among a group of men. When they attempted to approach him, Johnson attempted to flee the scene, sparking a chase. During the pursuit, a Glock magazine containing 13 rounds of .40 calibre ammunition fell from his possession. Johnson was later found hiding in a nearby residence and was promptly apprehended.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts by Jamaican authorities to combat the illegal possession and trafficking of firearms, which have contributed to violence in the country. Through the enforcement of the Firearms Act, law enforcement is sending a clear signal that illegal weapons and ammunition will be dealt with severely.

In addition to Johnson’s sentence, the conviction marks a significant step in Jamaica’s efforts to clamp down on illegal firearm possession, as authorities continue to address the growing threat of gun violence. The JCF is dedicated to removing illegal firearms from circulation and ensuring that those who break the law face appropriate consequences.

The outcome of this case is a clear example of the law’s commitment to curbing gun-related violence in Jamaica. With the conviction of individuals like Dwight Johnson, the justice system hopes to create a safer environment for all citizens, emphasizing the importance of compliance with firearm regulations.
