In a disturbing incident that has shocked the community, a Jamaica Defence Force soldier has been charged following a brutal assault on his girlfriend at her workplace. Lascelles Archibald Burke, a 42-year-old staff sergeant from Waterford, St Catherine, faces serious charges after the violent encounter.

The charges against Burke include possession of a firearm with intent to injure, assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, and using a firearm to commit a felony. These charges were brought after a ruling from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The incident unfolded on Sunday, February 16, 2025, around 6:50 pm at the woman’s place of employment on Rosseau Road in Kingston. According to police reports, an argument erupted between Burke and his girlfriend during his visit to her workplace.

The situation quickly escalated, with Burke allegedly hitting and kicking the woman multiple times, resulting in significant pain, bruises, and swelling. The violence intensified as she was pushed against a wall, and a firearm was forcibly inserted into her mouth and throat, causing further injury. Following the assault, Burke left the scene.

Authorities conducted an interview with Burke in the presence of his attorney, and a comprehensive file was submitted to the DPP, leading to the decision to charge him.

This incident marks the latest in a troubling series of domestic violence cases involving members of the Jamaica Defence Force. Earlier this month, another case emerged involving a 25-year-old nail technician who was hospitalized after being shot during a confrontation with her 40-year-old JDF corporal boyfriend.

These incidents highlight the urgent need for addressing domestic violence and ensuring accountability within the ranks of the military. The community watches closely as the legal proceedings unfold, hoping for justice and a broader conversation on preventing such violence in the future.
